Diabetes And You:

DETECTING DIABETES

Many people only become aware that they have diabetes after developing one of its life-threatening complications.

The best way to identify diabetes is to go for regular blood glucose screening. You can do so at NSM public roadshows, clinics, some pharmacies, and hospitals.

Raised blood glucose levels:

  • Fasting state (12 hours of fasting): ³140mg/dL (³7.8mmol/L)
  • Non-fasting state (2 hours after eating): ³180 mg/dL (³10 mmol/L)

If you have a high blood glucose level, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes, you may have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). People with IGT are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

See a doctor if you suspect diabetes.
